Dunkin’ Donuts

I have to say, donuts are a favorite treat in my house. On weekends when I am just too tired to get something together for breakfast, we often run to our local Dunkin’ Donuts. It is also a breakfast I turn to when we have guests in town.

And now to know that I can stick to my diet while eating there, even better.

Dunkin’ Donuts has a DDSMART menu that offers a variety of better-for-you breakfast options.
DDSMART menu items meet at least one of the following criteria: 25% fewer calories; 25% less sugar, fat, saturated fat or sodium than comparable fare, and/or contain ingredients that are nutritionally beneficial.

Sounds too good to be true, right?
A highlight of the DDSMART menu is Dunkin’ Donuts’ Egg White Flatbread Sandwiches. Dunkin’ Donuts is the first national quick service restaurant chain to introduce egg white sandwiches. The DDSMART menu includes two varieties of this innovative item: Turkey Sausage (featuring turkey sausage, spinach and reduced-fat mozzarella cheese) and Veggie (featuring peppers, onions, mushrooms and reduced-fat cheddar cheese). Both are under 300 calories, with nine grams of fat or less, and are served on wholesome toasted multigrain flatbread.
And yes, I have had both, and both are yummy, although I still prefer a nice donut with my cup of coffee! And speaking of coffee, other options include their coffees, lattes and espressos, which can be enjoyed for 70 calories or less when using skim milk and a sugar substitute. You can also get their Multigrain Bagel, an excellent source of fiber, with eight grams of total fat per serving.

I think the next morning we are running late and need a special treat before school, we are hitting Dunkin’ Donuts.
